MetroWest Chimney Services
Chimney Services MetroWest MA
One Local Team for Every Part of Your Chimney
Full Spectrum Chimney Services is based on Concord Street in Framingham, and our work takes us across MetroWest every week. From capes and colonials with century-old brick chimneys to newer homes with gas inserts and factory-built flues, we sweep, inspect, repair and protect them all.
Having one company handle all of it matters more than it sounds. The technician who sweeps your flue is the one who notices the cracked crown, and the company that finds the leak is the one that can fix it. Nothing gets lost between trades.

New England Winters Are Hard on Chimneys
MetroWest temperatures cross the freezing mark again and again each winter. Every crossing is another freeze-thaw cycle working on your brick, mortar and crown.
Why Local Knowledge Matters
What Freeze-Thaw Does to a Chimney
Brick, mortar and concrete all absorb water. When that water freezes it expands by about 9 percent, and the pressure cracks the masonry from the inside. The thaw lets more water into the bigger crack, and the cycle repeats all winter.
Spalling Brick
The faces of the bricks pop, flake and fall away, leaving the soft inner brick open to even more water.
Crumbling Mortar
Joints recede and crumble, opening channels into the stack. Repointing at this stage prevents a rebuild later.
Cracked Crowns
Hairline cracks in the crown widen every winter and send water straight into the core of the chimney.
It gets worse over time, never better. The fix is to keep the masonry dry: a sound cap and crown, tight flashing, solid joints, and a breathable water repellent. Our leak repair and waterproofing and chimney repair pages cover how, and a cracked flue from years of this is what our chimney liner page is for.
How Do I Choose a Chimney Company?
Six Things to Check Before You Hire
There are plenty of chimney companies in MetroWest. These are fair questions to ask any of them, us included.
Technician Credentials
Ask who will do the work and what training they hold. Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) certification belongs to the individual technician, and you can verify it on the CSIA website.
Proof of Insurance
General liability and workers' compensation. Ask to see the certificate, not just a badge on a website.
A Clear Scope
What level of inspection is included? Is a camera scan part of it? A low price often means a smaller scope.
Photos and a Written Report
You should see what they saw. Findings, photos and recommendations in writing, in plain language.
Itemized Estimates
A written, line-by-line estimate before work starts. Be wary of phone quotes for repairs nobody has looked at.
Local Reputation
Recent reviews from your area, and no door-to-door or high-pressure sales tactics.
Chimney Inspections
Level 1 vs. Level 2: Which Inspection Do You Need?
Fire safety standards call for every chimney to be inspected once a year. Which level depends on what has changed.
Level 1 Inspection
- When: your yearly check, when nothing about the system has changed
- Covers: the readily accessible parts of the chimney, fireplace and connection, inside and out
- Tools: flashlight and basic hand tools
- Time: usually 30 to 45 minutes
Level 2 Inspection
- When: buying or selling a home, changing fuel or appliance, relining, or after a chimney fire or severe storm
- Covers: everything in Level 1, plus the attic, basement and crawl space around the chimney
- Tools: a video camera scan of the entire flue interior
- Time: usually 1 to 2 hours
Buying a home in MetroWest? A general home inspection does not scan the inside of the flue, which is where cracked liners and hidden damage live. A Level 2 chimney inspection is the standard for any sale or transfer, and it is best scheduled before your inspection contingency runs out.
FAQ
MetroWest Chimney Questions, Answered
How do I choose a chimney company?
Check the technician's credentials, ask for proof of general liability and workers' compensation insurance, and make sure you know what the visit includes, such as the inspection level and whether a camera scan is part of it. A good company documents its findings with photos, gives a written itemized estimate before starting, has recent local reviews, and does not use high-pressure or door-to-door sales.
What is CSIA certification?
CSIA stands for the Chimney Safety Institute of America. Its Certified Chimney Sweep credential is earned by an individual technician who completes training and passes an exam covering fire codes, building standards and chimney maintenance. It runs on a three-year cycle, so holders must keep learning or retest to stay certified, and anyone can verify a technician on the CSIA website.
What services does a chimney company provide?
A full-service chimney company handles sweeping and cleaning, Level 1 and Level 2 inspections including camera scans, masonry repairs such as repointing and crown rebuilds, flashing and leak repair, waterproofing, chimney caps and dampers, and liner work. Not every company does all of these in house, so it is worth asking before you book.
How often should a chimney be inspected?
Once a year, according to National Fire Protection Association guidance, even if you rarely use the fireplace. Light use slows soot buildup but does not stop weather damage, animal nests or deterioration. Schedule an extra inspection after a chimney fire, a severe storm, a change of appliance or fuel, or when buying or selling the home.
What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 chimney inspection?
A Level 1 inspection is the routine yearly check of the readily accessible parts of the chimney and fireplace when nothing has changed. A Level 2 inspection adds a video scan of the full flue interior and a check of accessible attics, basements and crawl spaces. Level 2 is called for at a home sale, after a fire or major storm, or when the appliance or fuel type changes. A Level 3 inspection, which involves opening up parts of the structure, is only needed when serious hidden damage is suspected.
Do I need a chimney inspection when buying a house?
Yes. A general home inspector looks at what is visible from the room and the roof, but does not scan the inside of the flue or evaluate hidden parts of the system. A Level 2 chimney inspection can find cracked liners, clearance problems, water damage and blockages before closing, when repairs can still be negotiated.
What are the most common problems found during a chimney inspection?
Creosote buildup, cracked or gapped flue liners, deteriorating mortar joints and cracked crowns, missing or damaged chimney caps, failed flashing, and framing or other combustible material too close to the chimney. Most are inexpensive to correct when caught early and become major repairs when left.
